Well, it's official.  The title role for Soi Cheang's Monkey King: Wreaking Havoc In Heavenly Palace has been confirmed and its none other than Donnie Yen, the bankable action star who's been on fire lately.  If you may recall from our previous post, Jet Li was the other prime candidate under consideration from the producers to re-play the iconic character.  The major roles still left to be fill include Buffalo Demon King, Princess Iron Fan, Jade Emperor, and Erlang Shen.  Budget at US $45 million, Filmko Pictures plans to shoot the fantasy adaptation in 3D IMAX with Weta Digital on board to handle the special effects.

According to the poster on the left, the release date is slated for February 2012.

Chances of this getting a 3D release in the US = infinitely small. Chances of this getting an IMAX 3D release in the US = I don't want to crash Twitch with a divide by zero error.

When this gets released in 3D-Imax, I may have to coerce my employer into sending me to Kuala Lumpur once again...
Malaysian cinemas are wicked good in quality and all features carry English subs.

Only minus is that they censor a lot.

Dude, come watch it in Hong Kong!

Yea but will he be as good as Russell Wong is the real question here

Russel Wong was that good?

another 3D movie trash:/
oh man:/

anyway...Monkey King again...damn as anyone heard of a comic book called XIN, based on Monkey King?
That version was so freaking awesome.

I'm not looking forward to this movie, not unless the fighting is great

What? "Another monkey King, but a comic is great, but this looks bad, unless it's great?" Thanks for sharing Xino.

I'm a huge fan of the monkey king and the journey to the west novel and so far there isn't one film that depicted Sun Wukong properly and faithful to the novel *cough* the forbidden kingdom. The best monkey king was Liu Xiao Ling Tong so seeing donnie yen playing a cheeky, funny monkey would be most

I cant wait for this to come out i love these movie about the monkey king. Hmm and about Donnie yen as the monkey king it will be amusing to watch, will until then.

TO Saisensei:

I too am a big fan of The Monkey King, but the only version I like is the one that was shown many years ago and with English subtitles, by PBS in NYC, all 25 episodes, with the title role by the incomparable Liu Xiao Ling Tong!!! :) I'm so sorry at the time I didn't buy the complete set of cassettes, and now I want to but can't afford buying it... :(

But I hope you, or someone else in this Comments Section, could tell me where I could see again that old version of Monkey King. I'd appreciate it so very much!

Thanks ever so much! :o) Adela
